when I get back from the hospital tomorrow if I have time I will run my software and see what codes are stored and how come I can get more than 3 digits
i got the code from my car but with which software i can't remember

I think depending on the software you use will either show up as a no like P1572, or up to a 3 digit number , but will get this clarified when I speak to a mechanic next week, as going to pick his brains about it, as he's a whizz on electrics/electronics.

On the back of this I have found some software that may be useful to anyone with an E50 model and wanting to read the engine error codes. I already bought an ECUTALK usb lead( £70) and had previously bought an OTG(On The Go) lead and found some software called "Nissan Scan data lite 1 (free android app).
You plug in the OTG lead into your phone, then plug in the consult cable from ECUTALK, and then plug it into your consult plug. Put the ignition switch to on and start up the software on the phone and once its found your ecu your ready to run your car and check the error codes and clear them if needed, or simply monitor a number of sensors while the engine is running. I've attached a few photos of what it all looks like running.
The Ecutalk lead on its own can be run straight into a computer or laptop as well, but this idea is a little easier to use as most people use an Android smartphone.(Smartphone must support USB tethering)

This is excellent on a number of scales for me, as it will help with another project I am working on.
I don't suppose the cable charges the phone whilst plugged in does it?

I might need to build some sort of switch to go between this and a charging cable then for my project...

I'm really keen on getting a plug to connect to my laptop and run some diagnostics on the new van, could someone let me know how I can figure out what plug connector to get for my van. Are they all the same for the E50's? I've seen some bluetooth plugs for about £12 on amazon, there are 14 and 16 pin connectors, OBD-II and consult connectors have been mentioned on forum posts... Bit baffled as to which is the right one to get my hands on.

Next to the engine release lever under the dash is a grey connector. Count the number of pins in it and you'll have your answer.

If yours is pre facelift (easy check - headlight consists of 4 parts, headlight, side/fog light, turning light, indicator). Then you have the 14 Pin Consult port.

If yours is post facelift (easy check, headlight is ONE solid unit). Then you have the 16 pin OBD-II port.

Do you know what will read from this socket Karl. OBD2 reader/ scanner won't work with the 16 pin socket. Would like to read my codes if possible, but my present scanner won't touch it, despite reading other cars no problem.

Don't buy a dedicated obd2 reader, as this will only read obd2 software which is for European cars. What you need is an obd reader that says it will read consult 2 data which is a Japanese software, although your car may have what looks like a 16pin obd2 plug , your ecu uses consult software.
